A neighbourhood coffee café planned around the first hours of the day — an east-facing courtyard under a slatted oak canopy, with the brew bar as its stage.
The concept brief
Design narrative
A concept for a 260 m² specialty coffee café in a Riyadh neighbourhood.
Riyadh's best café hours are early, when the air is still cool and the light is low and gold. This concept turns the plan towards the east. A small open courtyard sits between the street and the interior, shaded by a slatted oak canopy that breaks the morning sun into soft stripes across lime-plastered walls, clay-tile floors and a row of stepped built-in benches. Guests can take their first cup outside before the heat arrives, then move indoors as the day warms.
Inside, a single long brew bar in honed travertine runs parallel to the glazing, so the grinders, scales and pour-over stations face the room and the courtyard at once. Seating is deliberately varied — high stools at the bar for a quick espresso, low benches with indigo wool cushions for longer conversations, and a few two-person tables along the wall. In the evening the canopy's concealed lighting takes over from the sun, and the café shifts from a bright morning stop to a quieter place to sit.
