Bakehouse Light Café
A bakery café lit from above, with the ovens behind a long glass wall so that baking becomes part of the room.
The concept brief
Design narrative
A concept for a 220 m² bakery café in New Cairo.
A bakery is at its best when you can watch the bread being made. The concept places the bakehouse along the back of the plan behind a long glass wall, with the ovens, proving racks and marble work tables in full view of the seating. Above, a row of north-facing clerestory windows brings in even, soft daylight — the light bakers prefer — and keeps direct sun off the pastries and the guests through the long New Cairo summer.
The front of house is organised for two speeds. A long honed-travertine bread counter near the entrance serves the morning takeaway line, while the seated café sits deeper in the room along a shared pale-oak table and a run of upholstered banquettes. Handmade glazed tiles in a soft cream line the counter and the bakehouse wall, easy to clean and gently reflective, and champagne-gold fittings pick up the warmth of the crusts on display.
