A 180 m² family apartment where storage is built into the walls, so the open rooms can stay quiet, light and easy to live in.

A concept for a 180 m² apartment for a young family in New Cairo.
A young family's apartment fills up quickly: toys, school bags, a pram, the daily laundry. This concept starts from storage rather than furniture. A continuous run of pale oak joinery lines the long wall of the living space, holding a shoe bench at the entrance, a desk niche, open shelves and closed cupboards, so the floor stays clear and the room can change from playroom to dining room in minutes.
The kitchen opens onto the living area around a wide island that doubles as a homework table, keeping a parent within sight of the children. Soft lime-washed walls, a warm microcement floor and rounded edges on the joinery make the rooms forgiving, and the palette is deliberately quiet so that the family's own things supply the colour. Finishes are chosen to be wiped, sanded and repaired rather than replaced.
Bedrooms are grouped on the quieter side of the plan, away from the entrance, and sliding doors let the children's rooms open into one larger play space during the day. Linen curtains filter the strong New Cairo light, and a warm lighting scheme of dimmable cove and wall lights lets the apartment wind down gently in the evening, room by room.
