The Blue Hour Penthouse

A concept for a 380 m² river-view penthouse in a Cairo residential tower.

Most penthouses are designed for the view at noon. This concept is drawn for the hour after sunset, when the river turns a deep blue and the city lights come on. The living, dining and library spaces run in one long enfilade along the glass, with no full-height partitions between them, so every room shares the view and the plan reads as a single gallery facing the water.

Because the glass wall faces west, the design works in layers rather than relying on blinds alone: a deep walnut-lined reveal, sheer linen curtains and a low ceiling cove trimmed in bronze. After dark the lighting stays low and warm — cove light, table lamps and a few picture lights — so reflections in the glass remain faint and the river is still visible from inside.

The private rooms sit behind a fluted walnut wall that runs the length of the apartment, concealing storage, a guest powder room and the door to the bedroom wing, so the public side of the penthouse stays quiet and uninterrupted. Materials are few and repeated: honed travertine floors, walnut joinery, brushed bronze and a blue-grey velvet that echoes the evening sky.
